Bay My Hero Irish Sport Horse and William Fox-Pitt second in Dressage in Kentucky Rolex 2014

It was a pleasure to watch the wonderful performances of Irish Bred horses competing at what is one of the worlds most prestigous events, the Kentucky Rolex CCI4* of which 3 Irish Sport horses made the top 10 rankings after the Dressage.

The work and schooling that goes in to creating the gymnastic movements showcases the suppleness, balance, lightness and trainability of the Irish Horse as well as their potential as Dressage horses. Irish Horses have often been overlooked as dressage contenders however with the correct schooling and training the Irish horse holds its own when it comes to this very popular discipline.

In second place is Britain’s William Fox-Pitt on Bay My Hero, by Cruising, and bred by Bryan Maguire, while in equal fourth is Mr. Medicott, by Cruising and bred by Dr. D. Geaney and ridden by the USA’s Phillip Dutton.

Seventh place is held by Pawlow, by Marcuzzi, bred by Ernst Pawlowski and ridden by the USA’s Will Faudree.
Representing Ireland at Kentucky is Tim Bourke and the nine year-old Irish Sport Horse Luckaun Quality, by OBOS Quality. Their current position is 53rd place on their debut at four-star level.

It is fascinating to note that twenty-two per cent of the entries for CCI4* Rolex Kentucky this year are Irish Sport Horses. Registered seller on the Irish Horse Gateway, Carol Gee of Fernhill Sport Horses is flying the flag high for Irish bred horses with an astonishing three Fernhill horses competing at Kentucky, Fernhill Present, Flutter and Fearless”.  Ireland it seems is not just Land of the Horse but the true home of the Eventer.

Imperial Cavalier & Mary King at London 2012

“I thought I wouldn’t ask any more of him. He’s done so much; so many huge courses in his life. He’s a proven cross country horse. When he tells me he’s not wanting to do it, it’s time for him to stop.” Mary King

Imperial Cavalier “Archie” is a bay Irish Sport horse who was born in 1997 and was bred by John Brennan, Ballyscanlon, Tramore, Co Waterford.  Imperial Cavalier (ISH) breeding is by Cavalier Royale (HOLST) out of Gene Pool (ISH), by Imperious (TB).

The silver Olympic team medallist winning mount was retired last week at the age of 17.   His contribution to the sport of eventing will be remembered for top placing at CCI4*, finishing in the top six out of seven as well as taking a Silver medal at London 2012, a Bronze team medal at European Champions in 2011 and part of the team that won Gold at 2010 WEG.

Mary King in her official statement upon retiring “Archie” said  “His enthusiasm for the sport and for life in general was second to none. He has retired fit, sound and healthy.” Imperial Cavalier had 1701 British Eventing points upon his retirement from the competitive sport of Three Day-Eventing.  It is believed he will go on to have an active retirement.  Mary King realised upon his last outing  and a near miss at Badminton CCI4* this year  that Archie had lost his “feistiness” and they bowed out of the competition with grace in what was one of Badminton International horse Trials most challenging courses yet.

Ridden and produced to three start level by Vicky Brake 2005 it was Mary King who then took the ride in 2007 on Archie.  Imperial Cavalier was owned by Eddie and Sue Davies and Janette Chinn.  It will be at the Chinn’s home where Imperial Cavalier will retire too.

World Eventing Championships Burghley 1966. Eddie Boylan & Durlas Eile to the left.

Durlas Eile who took his name from his place of birth Thurles. He was bred by Father Sweeney in Tipperary better know as the sporting cleric.  This was the horse that would be go on to be a  Badminton winning Champion, team winner at the World Championships and individual winner at the European Championships as well as creating a world record price before the Mexico Olympics.

Durlas Eile sire was by Thoroughbred Artists Son, by the famous Gainsborough. Artists son sired many a good steeplechaser but it was for Quare Times who won the Grand National in 1955 he is most remembered for. Durlas Eiles Dam, Royal Cob by King Cob out of Royal gem came from equally good parentage and the dam at seventeen years of age gave birth to famous Durlas Eile.

Durlas Eile a big bay gelding was kept at the Sweeney’s, broken and jumped, growing to a fine 17.1 hh, and as all big horses need he was given the time to develop. He was sold at the age of five to the Army Equitation School, where Army officers it was said literally cued to take him hunting. He had an extraordinary placid temperament and was a Grade A show jumper.

Durlas Eile was bought by Major Eddie Boylan who saw greatness in this very promising horse with a view to Three-Day Eventing.

Major Eddie Boylan was a “connoisseur” of horsemanship, he show jumped, hunted hacked and did dressage, a true all rounder. Throughout the year 1964-1965 Eddie Boylan was encouraged and trained by Mr. E Schmit-Jensen, the international dressage judge whom had judged dressage in the1936 Berlin Olympic Games and was a member of the FEI’s dressage commission and friend of the famous Frenchman General de Carpentry.

Major Boylan always gave his tutor the credit for Durlas Eiles success in the dressage phase of his three-day events. In 1967 Durlas Eile scored over 84% of the dressage marks, contributing to their European Gold Medal championship wins at Punchestown. It is believed that this performance has never been equalled. It was said that “the exhibition in dressage for that was what it really was-is thought to rate as the best ever in Three-Day Event”
Durlas Eile won international competitions at all 3 disciplines (won Championship in Dublin with Army Equitation School and Prix St George at the White City in London with Eddie.)
Durlas Eile was going to the Mexico Olympics but he was sold for a world record market price for a Three-Day Eventer to a Canadian Barry Sonshine for the price of £19,000 and the extraordinary partnership between Major Boylan and one of Irelands’ greatest horses came to an end.

Thirty-two year-old Irish Olympian Aoife Clark swept to victory yesterday (Sunday) at the three-star Bramham event in England, climbing ten places from her opening dressage score.

Riding the Irish Sport Horse mare Fenya’s Elegance, Dublin-born Clark made up lost ground during Saturday’s cross country phase after trailing British rider Izzy Taylor’s remarkable dressage score of 28.1, and was in second place before the final show jumping phase in Yorkshire yesterday, where she narrowly snatched victory with a zero score against Taylor and Orlando’s four faults.

World No. 1, Britain’s William Fox-Pitt and Freddie Mac settled for third place.

Ireland’s Mark Kyle with the Irish Sport Horse Coolio, by Ghareeb (TB), also turned in a clear jumping round at Bramham today, lifting them from overnight 12th to a 7th placed finish.

Horse Sport Ireland’s Eventing High Performance Manager Nick Turner said: “This was another sterling performance from Aoife. She was remarkably consistent through all three phases at Bramham, and this was a great result for her, especially after her victory at Blenheim last year. The owners are very important to us, and it was great to see Fenya’s Elegance’s owner PJ Hegarty here to see her win today (Sunday). Irish riders all turned in very good performances at Bramham, and overall it was a great day for Irish sport.”

Fenyas Elegance is both bred and owned by PJ Hegarty from Bandon, Co. Cork. Sired by Ricardo Z, Fenyas Elegance is out of the mare Fenya, by Good Thyne (USA).

Last year Ricardo Z progeny featured prominently in international Eventing and as a result, the Kedrah House Stud owned sire took the number 3 slot in the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) Eventing Sire rankings for 2013. With 1st going to Heraldik (TB) and 2nd to Master Imp (TB), this made Ricardo Z the highest-ranked living event horse sire of 2013.

From a foal she stood out: strong, energetic and a very quick learner,” recalls PJ. Fenya’s Elegance enjoyed a diverse and successful upbringing. As a young horse she competed in the Young Irelander in Millstreet placing 5th overall and emerging as the top filly. The Future Event Horse League (FEHL) saw Fenya’s Elegance win two qualifiers before being crowned the overall 4 year-old champion with Rosemary Connors on board.

In 2011, Ireland’s Brian Morrisson and Fenya’s Elegance represented the Irish Sport Horse Studbook at the FEI World Breeding Eventing Championships for Young Horses in Le Lion d’Angers, France, where they placed 18th.

In 2013 – an incredible year – Ireland’s Aoife Clark and Fenya’s Elegance made their first international appearance together when they took 2nd in Chatsworth CIC3* before placing 8th in Gatcombe CIC3*. Most impressively, the pair made history by winning the Blenheim CCI3* in September – the first Irish rider to do so in modern-day Eventing.

PJ is very excited about the siblings of Fenya’s Elegance. The five-year-old Fenya’s Guidingstar, by the Thoroughbred sire Kris Kin (USA), began his Eventing career in late 2013. Fenya’s Garsun, a full brother to Fenya’s Elegance, will begin the training process this spring and possesses an identical jumping technique to his sister, according to his breeder PJ. Fenya last produced a foal in 2011 by Cavalier Royale, called Fenya’s Royale.

Ireland’s Kevin Babington rode to victory in the $33,500 Friends of the Meadows Cup 1.45m Derby on-board the Irish Sport Horse Goodwins Loyalty.

This was the first international win for the Kilkenny born mare while paired with Kevin Babington. Goodwins Loyalty was previously campaigned by Shane Breen and David Simpson, the latter of which rode her in 2012 Hickstead Derby.

Breeder Larry Costello, a Registered Sellers with the Irish Horse Gateway, was delighted with the win adding ”

It is great to breed a winner but to breed a winner of a Derby is unreal. I would like to congratulate Kevin on his great win with the mare. Her dam Goodwins Belle has bred two Grand Prix showjumpers Goodwins Loyalty , Goodwins 007 , Goodwins Quality who is a 7 year old jumping  1m30 at the moment and Goodwins Reef who is a four star eventer”

The success of the Costello families breeding programme can be seen in various countries around the world. Goodwins Reef competed at Luhmuhlen CCI4* this June under Belgium’s Constantin Van Rijckevorsel having previously competed with Bill Levett (AUS). the beautiful Glory Days was previously competed at Nations Cup level by Sweden’s Daniel Zetterman and can now be seen under USA’s Katie Dinan. The dam of Glory Days, Diamond Glory, was bred at the Costello’s Kilkenny base – Goodwins Gardens.

Top Global Champions Tour rider buys Irish Sport Horse Ramiro Cruise

Edwina Tops-Alexander, currently the highest ranked rider of the 2014 Global Champions Tour, has added the eight year-old Irish Sport Horse Ramiro Cruise to her stable.

Ramiro Cruise was bred by Patrick Connolly, County Galway, and began his competition career with Olivia and Shane Burns in County Sligo. The Ramiro B sired gelding was then produced in the UK by Dave and Sharon Quigley who went on to record a number of international wins and placings.

The proud breeder Patrick Connolly said “I’m delighted that Ramiro Cruise has gone to one of the worlds top international showjumpers. It is not only a boost for our own breeding programme, but for the entire Irish Sport Horse industry“.

Sharon Quigley & Ramiro Cruise (ISH)

Sharon Quigley & Ramiro Cruise (ISH)

Horse Sport Ireland CEO Damian McDonald  added “We look forward to following the horse’s  progress and we wish Edwina every success with the horse. Obviously we’d love too see such a promising horse with an Irish rider but the next best thing is too see the horse go to a really top rider on the world stage“.

After seeing Cruising compete during the Millstreet Derby twenty years ago Patrick bred his Glacier Mint sired broodmare Cummer Glory to him and his breeding endeavors began there. The success of the Connolly family’s breeding programme is growing at an impressive pace. Few young horse classes take place in Ireland at present without the ‘CSF’ prefixed horses making their presence felt. Patrick Connolly is currently producing a five year-old half sister to Ramiro Cruise, CSF Maximum Cruise, by KEC Maximum Joe, ridden by Lisa O’Dea. Another half brother, CSF Salut Flamenco by Je t’aime Flamenco, is with Kildare based Julieann Gaffney. Cummer Cruise’s 2013 filly foal by Flipper d’Elle has been retained for breeding and the mare is currently in foal to Voltaire.

CSF Mr Kroon, by Kroongraaf out of the Cavalier Royale mare Norrira,  was the four year-old winner at the 2013 Dublin Horse Show with Ger O’Neill and is currently well placed in the Irish Sport Horse Studbook five year old league with Declan Egan.

Additional CSF bred horses of note include WCE Cruco (Alex Duffy – IRL), WCE Falco (Lucinda Roche – IRL), CSF Elmo (Martin O’Dea – IRL), Wily Wonty (Kayleigh Watts – GBR), Olympic Cruz (Lieven Devos – BEL) and Sera View (Annika Gustafsson – SWE).

With a large performance focused broodmare herd and a thoughtful, well planned, stallion selection process we can expect to see many more future starts flying the CSF flag around the world. To find out more about Connolly’s stud farm visit their website www.connollystudfarm.com.

Irish Independent journalist Siobhan English writes in today’s Farming Independent an article about the 3 Irish-bred mares which were recently purchased by Khalil Salim Al Obaidani, from the Sultanate of Oman through the Irish Horse Gateway.

The direct hands on approach by the Irish Horse Gateway Team and the quality of the horses on the Irish Horse Gateway  really helped clinch the deal.  The Irish Horse Gateway assisted the buyers every step of the way, from their visas to organising their accommodation as well as bringing them to their chosen yards to see a number of horses.

Peninsula Top Man & Canada's David Ziegler
Peninsula Top Man & Canada's David Ziegler

Peninsula Top Man (ISH) & Canada’s David Ziegler

2014 has been a highly successful year for the Irish Sport Horse Peninsula Top Man and his twenty one year Canadian rider David Ziegler. The traditionally-bred Peninsula Top Man (ISH), who initially began his career as an eventer, has clocked up eight international FEI Young Rider victories in Dressage this year.

His rider David Ziegler tells us how Peninsula Top Man (ISH) made his way from breeder John Nulty’s farm in County Kilkenny to his current life as an exciting Dressage champion in Canada.

Topper (Peninsula Top Man) was bred by John Nulty in 2003. He passed through a couple of yards before making his way to Paddy Hughes Carlingford based yard. It was there that my coach, Marilyn Dixon, found Topper as a five year old while on a top quality event horse finding mission for myself.

We watched Topper’s video back at home in Canada and fell in love. Topper then hopped on a plane and flew to our home north of Calgary Alberta, Canada.  He spent a week there in quarantine before being loaded up on the trailer with the rest of the horses and brought down to California for that winter.

In spring 2009 Topper began his event career with me starting at the Novice level back home in Canada, and moving up to Training level in autumn. That winter, 2010, Topper and I went to spend the winter training with Leslie Law (Olympic Gold Medal winning event rider) in Ocala, FL. We spent the year making sure he was confirmed at Training level. The next winter 2011, we began training with my current coach, Missy Ransehousen, daughter of Jessica Ransehousen (3x US Dressage Olympic Team Rider), and we made the upgrade to Preliminary level in March. Topper and I headed back home shortly so I could finish my high school classes, being 18 at the time. That summer we ran in five more preliminarys to qualify for the CCI* at Galway Downs in California.

This would end up being Toppers last event, he jumped the XC double clear, and had a rail in the show jumping, but his bravery had been maxed out at that level, so it was time to find Topper a new job.

I suggested he could just be our ranch horse as he loved herding the cattle at our farm, but my mother wouldn’t have it.  Topper was naturally gifted in the dressage so we decided we should turn him into a dressage horse! I moved to the Ransehousens home in Unionville PA in November 2011 with my Irish dressage horse and have never looked back.

David Ziegler (CAN) & Peninsula Top Man (ISH) at Devon CDI 2014

David Ziegler and Peninsula Top Man (ISH) began the 2014 season with a string of FEI Young Rider team and individual wins in Wellington, Florida, in January, which was then followed with a a silver medal in the The North American Junior and Young Rider Championships (NAJYRC) in Kentucky this summer and most recently the pair recorded a clear sweep when claiming the FEI Young Rider Team (PSG), FEI Young Rider Individual Test and the FEI Young Rider Freestyle at Devon CDIY.

The Irish Horse Gateway would like to thank David Ziegler for taking the time to share the story of his Dressage star Peninsula Top Man (ISH). We wish them continued success in their future partnership.

Breeding details: Peninsula Top Man (was ‘Dinin Kings’) (ISH) – 2003 gelding by Kings Master (ISH) out of You Can Do (ISH), by Hallodri (TB). Bred by John Nulty, Co. Kilkenny.

My horse of a lifetime ‘Bannerman Breeze’

by Debbie Tems

Bannerman Breeze aka Ferdie is a 19 year old Irish Draught.  He is by Springpark Easy Breeze, out of Springpark Banner Girl.  I bought him as a just backed 5 year old. I got him originally to hunt, and for two seasons we were out nearly every Wednesday and Saturday with the Laois and occasionally the Ormond. He proved himself to be a super hunter, never saying no to anything and extremely clever and surefooted. During this time I also did a bit of show jumping with him up to 120cm and again he took to it as if he’d been doing it forever.

2012-05-30 11.57.55I decided after a couple of seasons hunting that he had more to him and started to show him in Show Hunter, Working Hunter and Ridden Draught classes. His wins are too numerous to mention but those that stand out are as follows.

Supreme Ridden at Tullamore twice.
Third in a class of 17 at the inaugural Ridden Draught class in the RDS.
Twice Supreme Ridden at the annual IDHBA National show.
Reserve Champion in the All Ireland Working Hunter Championships.
Ridden Champion and Supreme of Show at the Wicklow Draught show.
Ridden Champion and Reserve of Show at above the following year.
Ridden Draught Champion at the Show of the South at Kill E.C.
Voted Performance Horse of 2009 by the IDHBA.
Many wins in Hunter classes at County shows.

He was also very successful under side saddle, winning and placing every time out including Balmoral and Tattersalls.

6When he reached the age of fourteen I decided to retire him from showing and started his career with Dressage Ireland. I was lucky to find a really good and sympathetic dressage rider/trainer, Jo May, from New Zealand, who understood that whilst he wasn’t bred for dressage there was no reason that with the correct training why he couldn’t excel in that sphere.

Our first few outings were interesting as he wondered why he was the only horse in the ring at the time and where was his rosette! He soon realised that this was a new game to play. He is competed by both myself and Jo, with her competing at a level above me. He has qualified for the National Championships at every level from Novice to Prix St Georges, doing his first PSG this year and coming 6th at the Nationals and also taking Reserve Champion at Advanced, and the trophy for the highest placed ID. He has more to give and is loving his new career.

He still hacks, jumps and goes X Country so has a varied lifestyle! I am so proud of the fact he has reached such a level in dressage and all being well will go higher. Not bad for a horse that didn’t start dressage until the age of fourteen!

ferdianjo (1)He is very trainable and quick to learn new things and what really makes him special is his honesty, temperament, rideability, character and intelligence. He is not afraid mentally or physically of the challenge that dressage requires. When pushed to the edge of his comfort zone he trusts. For his breed, his ability is above average in that he continues to meet the challenges and degree of difficulty that is needed within the movements that are required at each new level. If ID’s are given the chance and produced correctly, they are the epitome of a “sports” horse.

He certainly ranks as my horse of a lifetime!
