Rolex Kentucky three day event

In the build-up to last year’s Rolex Kentucky CCI4* we highlighted the previous Irish bred winners of the US event in the ‘Erin Go Irish’ series produced by the Irish Horse Gateway for our friends in Eventing Nation. ‘Erin Go Irish: Past Rolex Champions’ can be read here for those who missed it.

Victory in 2014 once again fell to the Irish Sport Horse studbook when William Fox-Pitt (GBR) and Wexford-bred Bay My Hero (ISH) finished on their dressage score to claim the prestigious event. Their was a further boost for the Irish bred event horse when Ballynoe Castle RM (ISH), ridden by USA’s Bruce Davidson Jnr, and Trading Aces (ISH), under Phillip Dutton (USA) also recorded top-ten finishes.

Bred by Bryan Maguire the 2014 champion Bay My Hero returns to Rolex Kentucky next week. Sired by the now deceased Thoroughbred Cult Hero, Bay My Hero is out of the prolific mare Bing Power, by Tomgar Power Crest, who is still an active part of the Maguire’s breeding programme. Additional Irish bred contenders include 2012 Olympian & WEG 2014 competitor High Kingdom (Zara Phillips), Ballynoe Castle RM (Bruce Davidson Jnr) who was 7th in Rolex 2014 and last year’s Blenheim CCI3* winner Easy Target (Francis Whittington).

Irish-bred event horses account for 41% of the accepted entries for this year’s Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. Eight former Badminton winners returning to the UK event this year, namely Australia’s Sam Griffiths, Paul Tapner and Andrew Hoy, New Zealand’s Mark Todd and Jonathan Paget, and Great Britain’s Oliver Townend, Pippa Funnell and William Fox-Pitt. Four of the eight, Sam Griffiths, Paul Tapner, William Fox-Pitt and Pippa Funnell, will compete Irish-bred horses.

Sam Griffiths and Paulank Brockagh (ISH) return to Badminton as defending champions, while fellow Australian, Paul Tapner will campaign Kilronan (ISH). William Fox-Pitt has entered his Rolex Kentucky 2014 winner, Bay My Hero (ISH), with team mate Pippa Funnell competing aboard the Irish-bred Second Supreme.

Six riders line-out for Ireland this year, five of which will be riding an Irish Sport Horse. The Irish contingent will be made up of Clare Abbott with Euro Prince (ISH), Joseph Murphy with Electric Cruise (ISH) and Sportsfield Othello (ISH), Michael Ryan with Ballylynch Adventure (ISH), Camilla Speirs with Portersize Just A Jiff (ISH), Sam Watson with Horseware Bushman (ISH) and Aoife Clark with Vaguely North.

Since 1995 Badminton Horse Trials has been won by an Irish Sport Horse six times. That year saw USA’s Bruce Davidson claim victory with Eagle Lion. The Gipfel sired gelding was bred by Patricia Nicholson whose breeding programme is still enjoying success with the Davidson’s through horses such as Knight Lion, Cruise Lion and Keltic Lion.

In 1997 David O’Connor produced another US victory onboard the Irish Sport Horse Custom Made. Finishing in second place was Mary King and Star Appeal who returned to win the class in 2000.

Great Britain’s Pippa Funnell claimed back-to-back wins in 2002 and 2003 with the highly successful Irish Sport Horse Supreme Rock who was sadly put to sleep in 2013 aged 25. Bred in County Cork by Lindy Good, Supreme Rock was by the Thoroughbred sire Edmund Burke and out of the Bassompierre sired mare Rineen Classic.

Good luck to each of the connections competing at the prestigious event this weekend. Further information on the event can be found at www.badminton-horse.co.uk .

Gorsebridge Go For Gold Sale 2015

GORESBRIDGE-MEDAL

By Sally Parkyn.

Strong sterling and dollar rates, together with a glut of graduate successes have heightened enquiries ahead of November’s flagship Goresbridge Go For Gold sale of event horses.

Now heading into its sixth renewal, older graduates are on the verge of major championship appearances, while youngsters from the 2014 sale have already qualified for the major young horse championships.

We are already answering new enquiries, especially from America.” Martin Donohoe revealed. “We are launching an extensive marketing campaign, and the strong dollar and sterling rates will obviously further the appeal.”

The success of the sale undoubtedly hinges on the quality and international potential of the horses chosen. Last year’s clearance rate of 75% was testament to this, as was the sale of Ireland’s record priced three-year-old at €53,500. Contributing to an average price of €14,000, a further 27 lots realised in excess of €10,000, with seven of these topping the €25,000.

Since the first Select Sale in 2010, graduates have been making a big impression on the world stage. Although even the early graduates are barely reaching maturity, the American based Copper Beach (Buck Davidson) has already won a CCI*** in Jersey Fresh. He recently returned to Irish soil to produce a brilliant double clear round in the feature Irish Field CCI*** at Tattersalls, as did Cooley Rorkes Drift who, ridden by Jonty Evans has recently been selected for Ireland’s ‘Rio Squad’. The Australian ridden Prince Mayo also shone under Paul Tapner to fill fourth spot in the CIC***.

On the far side of the world Red Curran was selected to represent China at the Asian Games last year, while Cooley SRS was the highest placed Irish bred seven-year-old at the World Championships for young horses at Le Lion D’Angers.

From 2014, two young geldings have qualified for the prestigious Burghley Young Event Horse Championship, and also for the British young horse championships at Osberton.

This year’s Go For Gold Sale will take place on November 9th, 10th & 11th 2015. Applications can be made on line or by form

The €50,000 Irish Breeders Classic was launched last week at Jim Bolger’s Beechy Park Estate in Rathvilly, Co. Carlow. The Irish Breeders Classic is a young horse showjumping competition that is confined to Irish born sport horses and it boasts a massive €50,000 prize fund making it the ‘Richest Young Horse Showjumping Competition in the World’. The concept was created to boost demand for horses bred by Irish breeders and 2015 will be its fourth year running. The event will run as a part of a show organised by Maurice and Felicity Cousins at their state of the art facility at Barnadown, Gorey, Co. Wexford from 3rd – 6th September.

Last year Goresbridge Horse Sales hosted an auction called the ‘Irish Breeders Classic Supreme Sale of Showjumpers’ at the event that was a huge success and a great benefit to the Irish sporthorse industry. Last year’s sale included Ard Ginger Pop achieving €95,000 which went on to win the silver medal at the World Breeding Championships at Lanaken, Belgium a few weeks later. Talks Cheap was also sold on the auction for €50,000 and landed the winners pot in the Irish Breeders Classic a few days later. This year will see a continued association between the Goresbridge Horse Sales and the Irish Breeders Classic. A selection of exquisitely bred foals will be auctioned off at the show and a hand-picked selection of world class young horses will be auctioned in November. Goresbridge will be generously donating 2% of the proceeds of the sale to the Irish Breeders Classic prize fund.

The prize fund is generated by voluntary contributions from organisations and individuals associated with the industry who all come together with a common goal of improving the Irish Sport Horse industry. Jim Bolger, world renowned racehorse trainer, Horse Sport Ireland, the governing body of the sport horse industry, Goresbridge Horse Sales, Transfer Mate, an Irish foreign currency exchange company and Showjumping Ireland who govern showjumping in Ireland are the main sponsors of the event for 2015. Along with these title sponsors of the event, a large list of new and loyal smaller sponsors will make the Classic a success this year.

It’s the sponsors that make the Irish Breeders Classic what it is. It is now an internationally respected class and some world class horses have benefited from its existence. For it to continue growing we need everyone to give as much business as they can to our sponsors” Irish Breeders Classic founder Ronan Rothwell explained. Indeed the list of horses that have achieved high profile success post competing in the Classic is eye catching. None more than MHS Going Global who finished 4th in the inaugural event and is now a very important member of the Irish Nations Cup team and a recent podium finisher in the elite Global Champions Tour.

Jim Bolger, who has been a loyal supporter of the event since its inception said, “the Irish Sport Horse industry generates nearly a billion euro to the Irish economy annually and is grossly under funded by the state and I think it’s fantastic to see like-minded people come together to develop their industry and I am proud to be a part of it”.

If you would like to enjoy the spectacle of showjumping at its best and a great day out arena side dining tables can be booked in advance.

For a full list of sponsors, to support or find out more about the Irish Breeders Classic log on to www.irishbreedersclassic.com or call Ronan Rothwell 087 6482155. You can also keep up to date with the progress of the event by following Irish Breeders Classic on Facebook and Twitter.

Horse Sport Ireland Press Release 24 July 2015

THE Longines FEI European Eventing Championship 2015 held at Blair Castle, 10-13 September, is proud to announce Horse Sport Ireland (HSI) as an Official Partner not only to this year’s prestigious European Eventing Championships but also into 2016 with the Blair Castle International Horse Trials.

Horse Sport Ireland’s initiative, The Irish Horse Gateway, will sponsor the International Supporters Pavilion, which is situated alongside the main arena and is a private members’ enclosure adjacent to the athletes and sponsors’ marquees.  The pavilion is designed to provide a comfortable and relaxing environment for the most discerning and loyal supporters of the sport, who are part of a recognised Event Horse Owners’ Association or Horse Trials Support group. With an excellent view of the main arena, Blair Castle and the spectacular hills beyond, hospitality, access to the Pol Roger Champagne tent, private garden, live CCTV coverage of the cross country action, free Wifi and access to the welcoming ceremony, it really is the place to be at Blair.  The Irish Horse Gateway will also have a dedicated fence on Ian Stark’s much anticipated cross country course and will be represented with a branded fence in the British Showjumping competitions, which take place over the weekend running alongside the European Eventing Championship.
The Irish Horse Gateway is an initiative of Horse Sport Ireland, its aim is to connect the world to the Irish Horse using both online and traditional channels. It is the first point of contact for overseas clients seeking information on sourcing Irish horses and ponies for Equestrian sport and leisure.  The Irish Horse Gateway’s mission is to connect buyers to sellers of Irish horses and ponies and promote the success of Irish horses and ponies internationally to build upon its reputation worldwide.
We are delighted to welcome Horse Sport Ireland on board to join us as an Official Partner.  The association with world class horse sport breeding is one we are particularly proud of and I am sure that there will be plenty of Irish Horse talent on display during what is set to be a fantastic weekend of Championship Eventing,” commented Event Director Alec Lochore.
During the weekend Horse Sport Ireland will be continuing its project to collect and analyse data relating to the conformation of horses competing at the highest level in the discipline of eventing.  Linear Profiles will be completed for the horses competing that have agreed to participate in the study, where conformation traits are measured against a scale.  The purpose of this research is to help in the breeding of the next generation of top class horse athletes.
The Irish Sport Horse Studbook has topped the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) eventing studbook rankings for the 2014 season, which runs from 1st October 2013 to 30th September 2014. Since the WBFSH rankings were established in 1994, the Irish Sport Horse Studbook has taken top spot in the eventing rankings for 19 of the last 21 years.
Elaine Hatton, Director of International Marketing, Horse Sport Ireland commented “We are delighted to be an Official Partner of the Longines FEI European Eventing Championship at Blair Castle.  It is a great opportunity to promote the Irish Horse Gateway on the European stage and in the UK and Scotland in particular where the Irish bred horses and ponies are increasingly popular.
The Longines FEI European Eventing Championship forms part of UK Sport’s National Lottery backed #EveryRoadtoRio events series, which will feature over 30 world class sports events the length and breadth of the UK, supporting British athletes’ preparation and qualification for Rio 2016. The Championship is also supported by EventScotland, which has a longstanding relationship with the team at Blair Castle.

Abbervail Dream: The horse of a lifetime

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Abbervail Dream at the age of 28. Mac, as he was known by all, lived out the twilight years of his life at rider Di Lampard and Dietmar Ackermann’s Spring Farm in Oakham, Rutland, Great Britain.

Mac was bought in 1990 in Ireland by Robert and Dina Verburgt as a 3 year old unbroken liver chestnut gelding from Dr. Noel Cawley. Mac was by the thoroughbred gelding Chair Lift out of Killea Beauty, by Smooth Stepper xx. After he was broken to saddle in Ireland he moved, aged 4, to Di Lampard who started competing him in novice classes and they began a journey which would touch many lives. Di an Mac quickly established a close bond which was to last a lifetime.

In 1993 as a 6 year old Mac qualified for three young horse finals at the Horse of the Year Show but a collecting ring accident left Di with a broken leg. At the age of 7, Mac went to Hickstead and won the Queens Cup that same year jumping his first World Cup at Olympia in London. This marked the start of a highly successful International career during which the combination became the mainstay of the British Team.

Di and Mac made their debut in the British Team at CSIO Rotterdam when he was eight years old and this was followed by over 40 appearances in the British Team. Mac’s last appearance in the ring was at St Gallen CSIO in 2003 in a Nations cup career spanning a decade. In 2004 Mac was officially retired at Hickstead with his dedicated groom of many years Hillary Thompson taking care of him that last time.

Di and Mac went to two FEI European Championships (Hickstead and Arnhem) and two FEI World Equestrian Games (Rome and Jerez).

In 1999, readers of the Horse and Hound voted Abbervail Dream “Horse of the Year”, a rare honour for a showjumper in a Great Britain.

Some career highlights for Abbervail Dream and Di Lampard:

Winner Olympic Star Spotters, Horse of the Year Show
2 x winner and 3 x 2nd, Queen Elisabeth Cup, Hickstead
Winner Cock of the North, Great Yorkshire Show
Winner Leading Showjumper of the Year, Horse of the Year Show
2nd World Cup Helsinki, 3rd World Cup Oslo, 2nd Grand Prix Aarhus WC, 4th Bremen Masters, 5th Berlin Grand Prix as well as numerous other wins placings around Europe.
Winner with Team GB including CSIO Dublin, Hickstead, San Marino and Lummen as well as numerous placings in Calgary, Rome, Dublin, La Baule, St Gallen and Rotterdam.
Team Bronze medallist, WEG Rome 1998 and 12th individually
Mac was a tough, brave yet careful blood horse with unlimited scope – he was a fighter who excelled in representing Great Britain in nations cups around the World. All of us will treasure our memories of him forever.

Laura Renwick (GBR) & MHS Washington (ISH)

In an outstanding day for the Irish breeding industry, two Irish Sport Horses finished in the medals at the FEI World Breeding Championships for Young Horses at Lanaken, Belgium on Sunday afternoon.

The Irish success came in the afternoon’s closing event, the 7 year-old contest in which Laura Renwick (GBR) partnered the Irish Sport Horse MHS Washington, bred by Kilkenny’s Ita Brennan, and Eoin McMahon rode another Irish Sport Horse Talks Cheap, bred in Limerick by Ronnie Kelly.

Both combinations made it into the twelve-horse jump-off, with Renwick snatching the lead only to be pipped for the Gold medal by Belgium’s Gregory Whatelet on Mjt Nevados S by 0.16 of a second.

Congratulating the medal winners, Chef d’Equipe Comdt. John Ledingham said: “It was wonderful to see horses that have been sold from Ireland continuing to fly the flag for the Irish Sport Horse, and their new owners and riders so proud to do so. It was very progressive to see new Horse Sport Ireland International Marketing Manager Elaine Hatton there to witness the medal-winning performances.
Horse Sport Ireland Breeding Manager Alison Corbally said that out of a quota of 15 ISH horses “to have 7 successfully qualified for the finals from a total of 706 entries was a good reflection of the breeding policy and the quality of show jumpers currently being bred in Ireland.
Meanwhile, there was another boost for Irish breeding at Blenheim, Great Britain Horse Trials, where Irish Sport Horse Loughan Glen carried American Clark Montgomery to an emphatic victory in the main class, while Jonty Evans and Aoife Clarke both put Irish Sport Horses into the frame in the 8/9 year-old class, Evans partnering Cooley Rorkes Drift (ISH) to 3rd, with Clark taking 6th on Wasting Light (ISH).

HORSE SPORT IRELAND

PRESS RELEASE

12/11/15

Record Breaking Year for Goresbridge Go For Gold & Supreme Sale of Showjumpers

The Goresbridge Go For Gold Sale took place yesterday evening (November 11th) with the auction taking place in the Amber Springs Hotel, Gorey. The Supreme Sale of Showjumpers took place on Tuesday (November 10th) evening. The viewing of horses began on Monday 9th of November at Barnadown Equestrian Centre and saw over 100 horses put through their paces.

Tuesday’s auction saw the Irish Sport Horse Dougie Douglas set a new Irish record for public auction by selling for €1.4 million at the Goresbridge Supreme Sale of Showjumpers.  The Nations Cup show jumper, competed by Holly Gillott and jointly owned by the rider and Graham Smith, has represented Great Britain in a number of Nations’ Cups in the last two years. The 10-year-old liver chesnut gelding, by Ard VDL Douglas out of the High Roller dam Neills Girl, was purchased by Irish agent Barry O’Connor for an American client.

Alexander Butler and Neal Fearon’s 7-year-old prospect Dekato was sold for €250,000 to Michael Drea of Great Britain as a mount for his daughter, show jumper Jessie Drea. The 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse Javas Wild Child by VDL Douglas was also purchased by Michael Drea, for €80,000. The last lot of the auction was another first for public auction in Ireland where an embryo out of 2014 Goresbridge sales graduate Ard Ginger Pop was purchased for €50,000 by Barry O’Connor on behalf of a European client .

The 2015 “Go For Gold” sale recorded the highest ever clearance rate recorded at a Gorsebridge public auction of 85%. The evening kicked off with lot no1, a 10 year old Irish Sport Horse mare by Hermes De Reve owned and bred by Anne Bannon. The mare was purchased by Irish Olympian Joseph Murphy for €85,000.  Just three lots later the Irish Sport Horse Peruising previously campaigned by Oliver Townend (GBR) at advanced level was sold to Carol Gee. The top three year-old on the night was lot 43, a gelding by Ramiro B bought for €43,000 by Richard Sheane. The Go For Gold Sale generated sales of over 1 million in sales throughout Wednesday’s auction.

Elaine Hatton, Horse Sport Ireland’s Director of International Marketing, speaking about the sales said; The Goresbridge Supreme Sale of Showjumpers & Go For Gold Eventing Sale was, as expected, a resounding success,” “Credit must be given to Goresbridge Sales and their selectors for compiling an all-round quality catalogue which attracted buyers from the UK, America, Europe and beyond in numbers. The results throughout the sale underpin the high standard of sport horse production found in Ireland. With clearance rates of up to 85% it emphasizes the fact that Ireland is a destination of choice for any buyer looking for quality and value.”

Martin Donoghue of Goresbridge Horse Sales said; “I’m over the moon for Goresbridge sales to sell Dougie Douglas for a whopping 1.4million euro – a new record high for public auction in Ireland. It is a fantastic shot in the arm for Ireland’s breeders and producers. This sale was a long time coming along and was the first of its kind. It was a huge success with generated sales from both auctions of approximately 3.2million. The Go For Gold Sales also set a record high with clearance rates reaching over 85%.”
